Although I am known to legions of schoolchildren as ‘Miss Nightingale’, ‘Your Majesty’ or just plain ‘Violet’, my real name is Nikky, and I run a very special company called Historically Speaking.
A perfect way to kick-start a topic, consolidate your pupils’ knowledge or complete a term, I visit your school or group in character and run interactive talks and workshops on Florence Nightingale and the Victorians, World War I and the VAD Nurses and World War II and the Women's Land Army. I also offer a talk for 'grown ups' entitled Katherine Parr: the Queen who Lived. School visits consist of two 1.5 hour classes, with each session including an interactive talk, Q&A session and object handling. To find out more about the sessions click here, or for logistics click here.
I am a trained actress and education professional, with a Cambridge University degree in Education Studies, English and Drama. I have years of experience of working with children in museums, schools and theatres, including the Florence Nightingale Museum, Shakespeare's Globe, the Greenwich Royal Observatory, the Wallace Collection, Benjamin Franklin House, the Vale and Downland Museum and the Museum of Oxford. I am also the writer and researcher of WW1 A Soldier's Tale. Over the years I have played many roles! Now resident in Wiltshire, I am delighted to be able to offer a few of the best to local schools.
Teaching is my passion, and I love my job. Being able to inspire children with stories from history is a great privilege and I look forward to sharing this with your students. Just choose who your class would like to meet, and let me know here!
Having visited so many primary schools, I am very respectful of the demands of school life. I am punctual, professional and easy to contact. I will bring everything I need with me - all I ask is a chair!
